Green Hills is a city along the Flathead River in Flathead County, Montana, United States. The population was 1,981 at the 2020 census.[3]

History

The area that would become the city of Green Hills was explored by Morgan McConnell in the early 1800s, who made his home base in Green Hills. The first settlers arrived in 1860. In 1883, Green Hills acted as a supply depot for the moving town that lead the path of construction for the Northern Pacific Railway, which was completed in Green Hills later that year on September 8th.

Geography

The City of Green Hills is located about a mile from the Flathead National Forest boundary, and 17 miles from Glacier National Park. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.05 square miles (5.31 km2), all land.

Demographics

According to the 2020 United States census, the population was 1,981 residents.

Parks and recreation

River's Edge Park has over 900 ft (270 m) of river frontage on Flathead River and occupies 28 acres (11 ha). The park has paved walking trails, open meadows, bathroom facilities and a family fly fishing pond. Pinewood Park Aquatic Center is a public swimming facility located on 4th Ave West. The park also has a basketball court, children's play area, picnic tables and swings. The city maintains several other small neighborhood parks, baseball fields, and a soccer field.

Transporation

U.S. Highway 2 runs through Green Hills. The North Fork Road (S-486) begins at the junction to U.S. Highway 2 in Green Hills and runs to the Canadian border. Commercial airline service is offered at Glacier Park International Airport located approximately 8 miles south of Green Hills. The Green Hills area is served by Amtrak's Chicago-Portland/Seattle Empire Builder, with stops located nearby in Whitefish and West Glacier.

In Sonic The Hedgehog (2020), the town of Ladysmith serves as the filming location for Green Hills, portraying the Columbia Falls area.

In the sequel, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (2022), the town of Fort Langley serves as the filming location for Green Hills, portraying the Columbia Falls area.

In Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (2024), both Innerdalen valley, Norway, and Bourne Woods, Farnham, England, alongside extensive VFX were blended to portray the Columbia Falls area.
