GREEN HILLS WEATHER

Green Hill Zone

"A field blessed with greenery and water. It's characterized by undulating terrain such as loops, sloping cliffs, and S-shaped tunnels. Let's run well with speed and timing." —Sonic the Hedgehog JP manual
"Go around the giant loop, tumble down tunnels, and jump over crumbling cliffs before you get a chance to blink. Bounce on Springboards but not on spikes. Ouch!" —Sonic the Hedgehog US manual

Green Hill Zone from Sonic Origins

Green Hill is the first Zone in the Sonic The Hedgehog series. It is located on Sonic's island. Green Hill Zone is a paradise with everything. Sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, public access to loop-de-loops.

Aesthetic

The visuals of Green Hill Zone were inspired by California and the work of pop artist Eizin Suzuki, as stated by Yuji Naka. The level design, mainly the green ground and tender slopes, was influenced by Hirokazu Yasuhara's memories of the Japanese countryside where he spent his summer vacations as a child. The iconic checkered ground was inspired by 3D image rendering from computers, an idea Naka obtained from Yu Suzuki, who utilized this technique in Space Harrier. This unique blend of inspirations tied together with a musical theme composed by Masato Nakamura, bassist from the J-pop band Dreams Come True, makes up the iconic abstract and distinct environment that is one of gaming's most recognizeable levels of all time.

It wasn't until the Sonic movie in 2020 when Green Hill Zone saw an evolution in the form of Green Hills, Montana, a fictionalized version of Columbia Falls, MT. Green Hills is the quintessential Montana town and "greatest place on Earth" according to Sonic. The Cali-inspired tropical paradigm of paradise that over the years has become admittely generic, is now refined into the refreshing, majestic, and surreal mountain paradise that is the gateway to Glacier National Park. Green Hills' sprite-based appearance in the end credits of the movie is much more apparent in it's city pop roots visually, more closely resembling how Green Hill Zone looked in the 1990 Tokyo Toy Show Sonic Prototype. A slightly darker sky, mountains in the background, visible buildings, and big welcome sign.
